Varsity Basketball v Oakwood Friends played on Monday February 13th, 2012

DDS basketball lost to Oakwood Friends School on Monday 32-19. The score does not truly reflect the effort and competition put for by DDS. Oakwood came out on a tear jumping out to a 24-0 lead. However, DDS showed its resilient nature outscoring Oakwood 19-8 for the rest of the game. Without Tia and Jasmine, DDS had contributions from each and every player. It was a tall task for DDS to contain the much larger Oakwood team, and by midway through the second quarter, they truly began crashing the boards and rise to the occasion on the defensive end.

DDS takes on Indian Mountain at home on Wednesday in its final game. It has been great seeing each and every player’s progess since the beginning of the season. Every player on the team has been immensely coachable, and I know we will end the season on a high note, win or lose.

Squash v Trinity Pawling played on Wednesday February 20th, 2012

Dutchess Day School squash team played an exciting match at Trinity Pawling on Wednesday and came away with spoils being even. The final result of a very entertaining match was 6 – 6! So many of the matches went to 4 or 5 games that the team did not arrive back to school until 6:15 p.m. claudia, again playing at #1 not only won her first game but did it in conviincing style 3 – 1. Although 3 of the games were settled by a margin of less than 4 points, Claudia claimed the fourth by 11 -2, a terrific performance on her part. After a shaky start, Will at #2 dispatched his opponent clinically finding his rhythym in the next 3 games. Henry at #3 played a very exciting 5 game match, and although he looked like he was going to win, it was snatched from him at the very end by an amazing last gasp effort by his opponent! Ellery started brightly at #4 winning the first game 11-6. However, her confidence seemed dented by losing the second game, and although she fought valiantly, she never seemed to regain it losing the next 3 games in a row! Gavin, playing at # 5 was certainly on his game. Serving tremendously well, he tore through his surprized opponent and stormed to a comfortable 3-0 victory…very convincing! Nick, playing well, did not have the same experience. After losing the first game 11-7, he revived his fortunes with an 11-3 victory in the second game. however, he could not maintain his grip on the game and his opponent stormed back to take the next two games and win the match. Jack, despite being out of the team for a while with illness, played a very tactical match to go 2-1 up. Somehow, he lost his way and his opponent sensing Jack’s torment, came back strongly to win the next two games and wrap up the match. Zack, playing at #8 looked confident and was hitting with great power and accuracy. He won the first game 11-1 and did not look back, making a clean sweep 3-0 very quickly. Wyatt, at #9 played a very exciting game against a very athletic opponent. This match was mesmerizing from start to finish. Wyatt, although playing quite well started badly.and soon found himself 2 games down. Not one to give up easily, he planned his comeback well. He won the 3rd game 11-9, scrambled the fourth 13 – 11 and stayed strong to win the 5th game and the match 11-9. Great result, formidable effort. Ava. however did not enjoy the same result. She started brightly, only losing the first game by 11-9. However, her confidence seemed shaken and she lost the next two by 11-4 and 11-2. There were 2 further games to be played with Ava and Zack opting to make up the numbers. One went to DDS and one to Trinity Pawling. After an exciting afternoon of squash, honors were even and DDS had achieved a very satisfying result. We look forward to our second TP game next Wednesday February 22nd. Many Thanks to Barrie Blake for providing snacks even though Maddie had to sit this one out with sickness.

Squash Match v Millbrook School Played on Wednesday February 8th, 2012

Dutchess Day squash team played their best squash of the season to see off Millbrook School by 5 games to 4. In a tightly fought match, it was our middle order that won the day. Gavin and Nick both played very well and won their matches in 4 games. Both players were very convincing in their play and always looked the likely victors. Will, Henry and Ava won their matches in 3 straight games making it look very easy. Maddie, playing at #9 did very well but again an errant service failed to let her accumulate enough points to secure any games. Once she gets her service going, she will go from strength to strength. Claudia played very well at #1 but found her opponent too agile and playing drop shots too well. Ellery was not at her best and struggled to get a run of points going. Finally, probably the most competitive match was played by Zander who narrowly lost a 5 game thriller against his opponent. Without the odd unforced error haunting him, he most certainly could have won! Great Result…Well done DDS. GO TIGERS!
Next game is against Trinity Pawling on Wednesday February 15th.

Varsity Basketball v Trinity Pawling (A) played on Thursday Feb 9th.

DDS lost to Trinity Pawling 24-12 on Wednesday. The game was a tale of two halves for DDS. Offensively, DDS scored all of its points in the first half, only trailing 16-12 at halftime. Unfortunately, we were unable to score any points in second half. DDS yet again showed immense signs of progress, outscoring Trinity Pawling 10-2 in the second quarter. We played excellent defense throughout the game, and each player should be proud of their effort on the defensive end.
Individual notes: Isaiah scored six points. Doug added a three pointer. Jack had one point on a foul shot, and Ben contributed a basket of his own. Jasmine had her best game of the season on the defensive end. Tia and Tess contributed yet again on several rebounds, and defensive plays. Laura and Jen have begun really working together at the top of the defensive zone, and displayed great effort.
Next game: DDS takes on Oakwood Friends Academy on Monday, looking to end the last couple of games on a high note.

Varsity Basketball v Melrose played on Monday Feb 6th @ DDS

Varsity basketball lost 22-20 in a tight game against Melrose on Monday. The game was DDS’s best of the season, and each player should be proud of the effort they put forth. DDS was down 14-8 at halftime, and came roaring back to make it 22-20. DDS’s defensive pressure created two game winning opportunities. It was truly a pleasure to coach in a game that saw contributions from every single player.
Individual notes: Doug and Isaiah led the way with ten points each. Each player was the catalyst for the offensive production, and a key to the comeback. Ben added two points of his own on great cut to the basket. Jack was a presence defensively inside, and also had many assists offensively. Laura and Jen played excellent defense, and numerous times their steals lead to transition opportunities. Tess and Jasmine played tough defense on the block, and controlled many rebounds in key moments of the second half. Tia played her best defense of the year, including several rejections while playing underneath. Unfortunately an injury to Tommy caused him not to be able to play most of the game. However he was a great teammate on the bench, and his positive attitude was an asset to the team. Next game: DDS takes on Trinity Pawling away on Wednesday.

Squash v IMS played on Wednesday February 1st, 2012

Once more IMS brought their strongest team out to play the DDS tigers. Again the result was 12 – 0 in favor of the visitors. As usual, there was some fantastic squash played too by many of our players. Perhaps the brightest performance of all was by Zander, who fought a thrilling 5 setter, and who, trailing by 9 points to 1 in the final set, nearly made the comeback of the season but finally bowed out 11 – 8. Truly, a great effort. Henry and Gavin were the only other two players to capture a game. Henry played some of the best squash of his DDS career to take the third game 11-9. Unfortunately, he was unable to continue his momentum and finally succumbed 11-3 in the fourth game. Gavin’s games were all close and it suggests he is on the verge of major improvements in his game.He won the first game 11-9 but then went on to lose the last 3 10-12, 13-15 and 7-11. Will was up against Heidi. Losing the first two games with few points on the board, he made a gallant effort in the third, eventually losing 11-8. Everyone else lost 3-0 with IMS just proving too strong and experienced for our players. Well done Ava for playing an extra match at the end to give their #12 a game!

Varsity Basketball v Mizzentop played on Monday January 30th, 2012

Varsity basketball was defeated 35-12 on Monday at Mizzentop. Yet again DDS showed its resiliency in the second half scoring 10 of its 12 points. The team was a bit out of rhythm in the first half, however started to really hit their stride in the third and fourth quarters. Defensively, DDS had numerous steals and fast break opportunities in the second half, but they just couldn’t seem to get the opportunities to fall. DDS looks to build off its strong second half showing next Monday when they take on Melrose at home.
Individual notes: Jack and Tommy had four points each. Isaiah added two of his own. Laura and Jen played exceptional defense on the top of the key. Doug had several steals leading to fast break opportunities. Tia, Tess, and Ben all played with a lot of determination down low contributing to several rebounds.

Squash Match v Millbrook School played on Monday January 22nd, 2012

Once again, Dutchess Day School squash team played the high school boys from Millbrook School. The team played exceptionally well, but Millbrook ran out eventual winners by 9 matches to 3. Triumphant DDS players this time were Will, Zander and Wyatt. While both Zander and Wyatt ran out relatively comfortable winners 3 – 0, Will was involved in a fascinating 5 game match against a very athletic opponent. Playing smart squash, Will dominated the 5th set 11-8 winning an overall very tight contest!
Four of our players took their opponents to 4 games. Wynne, Zack, Ellery and Claudia all took a game from their opponents. Claudia, with the hardest task, played some excellent squash but it was an uphill struggle against a very confident and strong opposite #1.Zack probably had the best chance to defeat his opponent but was left to rue what could have been after winning the first game 11 – 6 and then losing the next 3 all too easily! On the plus side Wynne came close in most of her games and Ellery, suffering from a cold bravely did her best but was not in good enough shape to affect the result. Henry, Gavin, Nick, Ava and Maddie had to take it on the chin, each with 3 – 0 losses. All played hard but were up against some very strong and skilled opposition. Great effort team. Next game v IMS on Wednesday Feb 1st on the new courts at Millbrook School.
