Dutchess Day School 7 Maplebrook 4
Game played at Millbrook Golf and Tennis Club on Wednesday May 2nd, 2012

It was a cool gloomy day but the DDS tennis team played extremely well to beat Maplebrook 7 games to 4. Playing in their first matches of the season, Cora and Lauren won a close match 6 – 5 against Maplebrook players Nora and Josh. Phoebe and Greata likewise playing in their first match of the season also played some good tennis but were unable to overcome their opponents, Amber and Nona, and finished 4 – 6 games down. In the rest of the doubles games, DDS were strong and apart from Ben and Jen narrowly losing 6 games t0 5, all were successful. Amanda and Amelia won 6 – 1, Gavin and Jack won 6 – 4, and Laura and Isaiah won 6 – 2. In the singles games, Sabrina won 6 – 3, Connor 6 – 2 and Isaiah 6 – 4. Ben and Laura, playing in their second games of the day, played some great tennis, but went down 6 – 1 and 6 – 2 respectively. Overall, it was a great day for DDS tennis. The courts were excellent, Mrs Paula Smith provided some terrific snacks and the team played some great tennis!

Reports on recent girl’ lacrosse games

DDS Girls’ Lacrosse Report

On Monday, April 23rd, the DDS Girls’ lacrosse team traveled to Mizzentop to play. The game was exciting from the first draw to the very end of the game. Both teams traded goals throughout the match; no one could really take a decisive lead. Dutchess used their strong teamwork to set up the shots on goal. Four players scored all the goals for DDS—Danielle had one, Anna had three, Ellery had two and Caterina had three, but they owed their success to their teammates who assisted by setting up their shots. Samantha, Katherine and Danielle all had assists. In the meantime, at the other end of the field, the defense was keeping it close with some excellent plays. Maddie had an interception of a ball headed into the goal and Jasmine intercepted a pass to deny a Mizzentop scoring attempt. Our goalies, Katherine and Wynne, both had some timely saves. Katherine had three and Wynne had six. With ten seconds left to play, Anna got the ball and headed toward the goal. With a crowd in front, it took some time to get a clear shot. It ended up being just one second too long. The whistle blew, and the shot was off and went into the goal, but it didn’t count. DDS had to settle for a 9-9 tie in a hard-fought game.
On Friday, April 27th, it was a different story. The DDS girls were at home, hosting an inexperienced Steiner team. The Tigers dominated the game from the beginning. Caterina began the attack with the first goal at about two minutes into the game. She went on to score two more, while Ellery added two, Anna had three, Danielle had two, Ava had three and Tia had two. These scorers were assisted by great passes from several people. Jasmine had three assists, Annabelle had an assist, and Anna and Ellery both had four assists. This was a real team effort, with several of the newer players making an impact on both ends of the field. Lucy played tough on defense, while Annabelle had several scoring attempts and Tess hustled to recover the ball on the offensive end of the field. Maddie, Olivia, Simone, Samantha and Jasmine worked well together to shut down much of Steiner’s offense. Wynne and Katherine, who shared time in the goal once again, combined for eight saves. When the final whistle sounded, DDS came away with their first decisive win of the season by a score of 15-8.

Girl’s Lacrosse News 2012

Girls’ Lacrosse News 2012

The girls’ LAX team played their first game of the season with Rumsey’s inaugural lacrosse team. The contest was exciting, with the score see-sawing back and forth for most of the time. By the end of the game, four DDS players had scored their first goals of the season. Caterina had two, Anna had three, Danielle had two and Ava had two. Goalies Katherine and Wynne split the time in the goal, and each of them had several saves to keep the score close. When it was over, the score was 9-9. DDS played to a hard-fought tie with Rumsey.

In their second game, the girls faced a strong Millbrook Rec team, comprised of many talented players from the surrounding area. DDS was challenged for possession on every ground ball and every pass, but with determination and persistence they maintained control and got off many good shots on the Millbrook goal. Five of those shots, three by Caterina and two by Anna, connected to keep Dutchess Day in the game. Ava, Tia and Ellery all assisted on setting up the goals. Wynne and Katherine again split the time in goal and each of them deflected several hard shots by the Millbrook Rec offense. Jasmine, Samantha, Simone and Maddie all played well on defense, creating turnovers to help set up the offense. The final score was again a tie: 5-5!

On Saturday, April 21st, the DDS GLAX team played in the Saugerties Lacrosse Festival. They were in the 7th and 8th grade division where they played four teams that were new opponents. The Tigers were well-matched to each of these teams, who were either club teams or school teams. Their first game was with Southern Dutchess, a local club team. DDS played well, with both offense and defense contributing to the team’s success. Once again, DDS played to a tie. The final score with Southern Dutchess was 5-5. In their second game, the Tigers played Warwick. The teams were pretty evenly matched, but DDS’s offense broke out with several goals: two by Danielle, two by Ellery, one by Anna and one by Claudia. At the same time, the defense closed the door on Warwick’s scoring efforts. Jasmine, Samantha and Maddie recovered many passes, while Katherine and Wynne turned away a number of shots on goal. Dutchess came away with the win, 6-4. In their third game of the day, DDS played the host team, Saugerties. Saugerties had some very strong, experienced players, who took advantage of a few Dutchess Day mistakes to score. DDS came back with their own scoring effort, but came up short, losing by one goal, 4-5. In their final game of the day, the Tigers played another club team, Northern Dutchess. This was their best game of the day, with several people combining to score seven goals. Anna had two, Danielle had one, Ava had one, Tia had two, and Ellery had one. This was a real team effort with great passing and communication. On the other end, the defense was on fire, with several key interceptions, and many timely saves by both Katherine and Wynne, who shared goalkeeping duty. All in all, it was a great experience for the girls, with wonderful weather and lots of lacrosse. They had a great time. Thanks to all the parents who came and supported them and cheered them on, and those who brought snacks and drinks to sustain them during the day!

DDS Tennis Match v Rumsey played on Wednesday April 18th, 2012

This was always going to be a tough task for the DDS Tennis Tigers, and so it proved with all but one of our matches being lost to very strong opponents. Isaiah, playing his first match of the season, proved the exception, and although restricted to a short 5 game match, demonstrated that he has not only the skills required to compete at school team level, but also the resilience and mental toughness too. Serving and hitting terrific ground strokes, Isaiah surprised his opponent coming out as a 3 – 2 game winner.
Jack Q and Connor managed to grab a couple of games each from their matches, Gavin took one from a very steady opponent, and Jack B. and Matt, although coming close on a number of occasions had to settle for 6 – 0 defeats. From all this, I have to say, comes alot of hope. Matt is a revelation this year. He struggled to win this match, but he is a far more accomplished player now. Jack Q, Connor, Gavin and Jack B. can and will play better in future games. In the doubles, we were fairly well routed. To be fair though, two of our doubles teams, Amanda and Amelia, and Sabrina and Pam are very much new to competition of this magnitude, so it was hardly surprising that they found the going tough. They did very well though and their matches proved great experiences for them. Our more experienced pair of Ben and Laura, managed to get a game but were generally overwhelmed by two very steady opponents. Laura played some great tennis, serving well. Ben too had his moments but his confidence was being shaken, and the pressure of the game became too much to handle. As a team generally, we need to work on our mental approach to matches!
